The language mikum.me opens in

Nine languages on the homepage, Hebrew in Israel, and how to change it for good.

mikum.me picks a language for you the first time you arrive, and remembers the one you pick yourself.

How it chooses

  1. 1If you picked a language here before, that is the one you get, everywhere, on every visit.
  2. 2Otherwise, if your browser is set to one of the languages mikum.me is written in and that language is not English, you get it: עברית, العربية, Русский, Español, Deutsch, Français, Italiano or Português.
  3. 3Otherwise, if you are in Israel, the site opens in Hebrew, even when your phone or browser is set to English. Most Israeli browsers are set to English, and an English interface is not usually what the person behind one is asking for.
  4. 4Anywhere else, it opens in English.

Changing it

Open the account menu (the pill with your name at the top of your dashboard, or the mikum mark in the guide editor) and pick English or עברית on its Language row. On screens where you are not signed in (the homepage, pricing, an invitation or a gift link) the same choice sits behind the 🌐 button in the header. The page reloads in the new language and stays that way on your next visit, on that browser.

You can also set it from Account → Language.

💡Changing this changes the screens *you* see. It does not change the language your guide is written in. For that, see the guide's own language and translations.

Terms and privacy in Hebrew

Our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are published in both languages, and each page links to the other at the very bottom. You can also open either one straight in the language you want: mikum.me/terms?lang=he and mikum.me/privacy?lang=he, or ?lang=en for English, which is the link to send someone whose own browser opens the other language. The two versions say the same thing; if they ever differ, the English one is the binding text.

When the switch is not there

The 🌐 and the Language row only appear for visitors Hebrew is plausibly for: anyone browsing from Israel, anyone whose browser is set to Hebrew, and anyone already reading mikum.me in Hebrew. For everyone else (a guest opening a guide from Berlin or New York) an English/Hebrew toggle is one more control on screen that was never meant for them, so it stays hidden and the site simply follows their browser. How the language itself is chosen has not changed; this is only about who is offered the switch. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy follow the same rule: a reader who is not offered the switch is not pointed at the Hebrew versions of those documents either. The English text is the binding one in every case, and both documents say so.

To bring it back on a device where it is hidden, open any mikum.me address with ?lang=he on the end, for example mikum.me/help?lang=he. From then on the switch is on screen again in that browser, and you can pick either language as usual.

The homepage in nine languages

The mikum.me homepage itself is written in nine languages: English, Hebrew, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic. Each one is real copy written for that language, not a machine translation of the English, and Hebrew and Arabic are laid out right-to-left. On the homepage the 🌐 always lists all nine, wherever you are browsing from, and picking one changes the page immediately, no reload. Your choice is kept in the address bar, so a link copied from there opens in the same language for whoever you send it to.

If your browser is set to one of the nine, the homepage opens in it on its own, in Israel too. Only a browser set to English gets Hebrew there by default, and the 🌐 is how you change it.

Your dashboard, the guide builder and this help center are written in the same nine languages and follow the same rule, so a browser set to Spanish gets Spanish on those screens too. Your guides are separate again: a guide can be translated into any of the fifteen languages mikum.me supports, from the guide's own language settings.

What language your guests see

A guide opens in the language of whoever is reading it. If their browser is set to Arabic, Russian, or any other language you translated the guide into, that is what they get, wherever the place itself is. Only when their browser is set to English, or to a language you have not translated the guide into, does the place decide instead: an Israeli address opens in Hebrew, a Greek one in Greek, and a guide with a Hebrew translation opens in Hebrew for anyone reading it from inside Israel. The 🌐 at the top of a guide lists every language that guide has, and a guest can always switch by hand.

Good to know

The choice is stored on the device you made it on, so a new phone or a private window starts from step 1 again. Clearing your browser data clears it too.
